Verified Reis Magos

Goa, India

Reis Magos Fort in Goa, built in 1551 by the Portuguese over an earlier Adil Shahi military outpost, is one of the oldest colonial structures in the region.

Strategically located overlooking the Mandovi River, it served as a key defensive fortification for Velha Goa, the Portuguese capital, and was later used as a residence for viceroys, a military stronghold, a hospital, and a prison. The fort features high laterite stone walls, cylindrical watchtowers typical of Portuguese architecture, and a moat with a drawbridge.

Its robust design made it nearly impregnable to Maratha and Adil Shahi attacks, and it housed 33 cannons in various sizes for defense. The fort’s chapel, dedicated to the Three Wise Men, reflects Portuguese religious influence, while its architecture blends European military styles with local building materials and techniques.

After falling into neglect during the 19th century, the fort was restored in recent years and now serves as a cultural center and tourist attraction, offering insight into Goa’s layered colonial history.
