Revdanda Fort
Revdanda, Maharashtra, India
Revdanda Fort, located at the mouth of the Kundalika River meeting the Arabian Sea near Revdanda village in Maharashtra's Raigad district, India, was constructed by the Portuguese starting in 1528 atop earlier structures including a 1516 factory known as Chowkoni Buruj.
This coastal stronghold, spanning about 5 km in circumference with thick walls encircling much of the village, served as a key base for maritime control and defense against Maratha attacks, notably repelling sieges in 1683 and changing hands to Marathas in 1740 before British control from 1806.
Today, its ruins feature a main entrance with a Portuguese emblem, scattered cannon balls, a roofless bell tower from a former church, and palm-fringed ramparts ideal for high-tide views, blending into modern village life just 18 km from Alibag.
