Roha Fort
Roha, Gujarat, India
Roha Fort in Roha, Gujarat, India, was a significant and powerful fortress built starting around 1550 CE under Rao Khengarji Jadeja I of Kutch, who established the town and gifted it to his brother Sahebji.
The fort, situated on Roha Hill about 50 km from Bhuj, stands 250 meters above sea level and covers an area of roughly 16 acres. It was completed in the 18th century by Thakur Noganji and featured palatial structures, temples, including a prominent Radha-Krishna temple with exquisite Rajput-style architecture, and defensive walls. Historically, Roha was a wealthy jagir with 52 villages under its rule.
The fort is linked to legends, including one about a goddess's idol buried in a well on the site and stories of valor and sacrifice by princesses during attacks. Over time, factors such as invasions, British modifications, neglect, and the 2001 earthquake have led to much of the fort's ruin, though it remains a site of cultural and historical importance amid the scenic natural surroundings, with peacocks and other wildlife still found there.
The fort reflects the rich heritage and past glory of the Kutch region, despite its current state of decay and abandonment since around 1965.
