Verified Sadashivagada Fort

Karnataka, India

Sadashivgad Fort in Karnataka was built in 1715 by Basavling Raja of Sonda and named after his father, Sadashivling Raja.

It is situated on a hill about 200 feet high on the northern bank of the Kali River where it meets the Arabian Sea. The fort is known for its thick ramparts about 8 meters high and 2 meters wide, with towers and openings for artillery. Historically, the fort has witnessed rule and conflicts involving the Portuguese, Marathas, the East India Company, Tipu Sultan's forces, and the British.

The fort is famous for its proximity to the Shantadurga Temple and a 17th-century Muslim dargah, both of which are important religious sites. The Portuguese once called it Forte de Piro due to the dargah. Although much of the structure was destroyed by the East India Company in 1783, its ruins still reflect the fort’s strategic importance and rich history as a military bastion and regional power center.

Shivaji visited and captured this fort during his campaign along the Malabar coast, and it holds a place of reverence among Maratha heritage sites.
