Sadras Dutch Fort
Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India
Sadras Dutch Fort, located near Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, is a significant colonial-era fortress built in the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company as part of Dutch Coromandel. The fort was established on the site of the former town known as Sadurangapattinam, famous for weaving superfine muslin textiles for export.
The Dutch used Sadras as a major trading post for cloth, pearls, and edible oils, constructing a large fortress compound with granaries, warehouses, stables, and living quarters. Architecturally, the fort had features like arched windows, brick floors, an underground drainage system, and even a dyeing tank for cotton cloth, reflecting its role in textile manufacturing.
The fort witnessed significant historical events, including the first naval Battle of Sadras between the British and Dutch in 1782, highlighting colonial rivalries. Over time, the fort was damaged in wars and changing colonial powers but still retains ruins like warehouses, cannon placements, a cemetery with intricately decorated graves, and remnants of its original defensive walls.
The Archaeological Survey of India has undertaken restoration efforts, preserving its historical significance as a testament to Dutch colonial trade and military presence on the Coromandel Coast.
