Verified Sadras

Tamil Nadu, India

Sadras is a historic fortress town located on the Coromandel Coast in Tamil Nadu, about 70 kilometers south of Chennai and near the town of Mahabalipuram. Originally known as Sadurangapattinam, the town has deep historical roots dating back to the 14th century when it was referred to as Rajanarayanan Pattinam.

It gained prominence during the 17th century as a Dutch trading post, where the Dutch East India Company built a fort to protect their commercial interests in textiles, pearls, and edible oils. The Sadras Fort, now in ruins but maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, includes remnants of granaries, stables, and a cemetery with beautifully decorated graves from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Sadras is also notable for its nearby Vishnu temple and its involvement in the Battle of Sadras between the Dutch and the British East India Company. Today, Sadras offers a quiet coastal atmosphere with serene beaches, local fishing communities, and a rich cultural and colonial heritage, making it a unique destination for history enthusiasts and travelers seeking tranquility away from bustling tourist centers.
