Sagargad Fort
Bamangaon, Maharashtra, India
Sagargad Fort, also known as Kheddurg, is located in the Alibag taluka of Raigad district, Maharashtra, standing approximately 1,250 feet above sea level in the Sahyadri mountain range.
The fort holds significant historical importance, having been captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from the Adilshahis around 1660. It was one of the 23 forts ceded to the Mughals in the Treaty of Purandar in 1665 but was later recaptured by Shivaji. Sagargad was central to guarding the coast near Alibag before the construction of other forts like Khanderi and Kulaba.
The fort offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding Sahyadri hills, featuring ruins of old structures, temples, rock-cut water tanks, and a notable cliff where prisoners were allegedly sentenced to death.
During the Maratha period, it passed through many hands, including the famed naval chief Kanhoji Angre. Under British control after 1818, the fort was used for its strategic location and pleasant climate, where British officers built rest houses. Today, Sagargad is a popular trekking destination reflecting a balanced blend of nature, history, and culture.
