Sahasrabahu Twin Temples
Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India
The Sahasrabahu Twin Temples in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, are 11th-century Hindu temples located within the Gwalior Fort complex, dedicated to the gods Vishnu and Shiva.
Built around 1090–1093 by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, the larger temple, known as "Sas" (meaning mother-in-law), was constructed for his wife, while the smaller "Bahu" (daughter-in-law) temple was for his daughter-in-law.
The temples are notable for their intricate carvings, multi-storey design, and sophisticated Sekhari-style architecture, featuring profuse decorations of pillars, ceilings, and walls depicting various Hindu traditions, including Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Shaktism.
Although the temples are mostly in ruins today, with much of their sculpture and statues damaged or missing due to historical invasions and conflicts, they remain a significant example of medieval Hindu temple art and architecture, reflecting the cultural heritage of the region.
