Sakuya Konohana Kan
Moriguchi, Japan, Japan
Sakuya Konohana Kan is a large indoor botanical garden located in Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park (often listed under Moriguchi) in Osaka. Built as the City of Osaka pavilion for the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition, its greenhouse covers about 6,900 m², rises to 30 meters, and uses roughly 5,000 glass panels shaped to evoke water lilies. The garden cultivates some 15,000 plants representing thousands of species from global climate zones—tropical rainforests, Pacific islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, arid deserts with cacti and baobabs, alpine and arctic environments, and high‑elevation mountain flora. Exhibition rooms are climate‑controlled to replicate each habitat’s temperature and humidity, with highlights including a Tropical Aquatic Plant Area featuring colorful water lilies and Victoria lilies and a Succulent House showcasing desert species. Visitors can join the free "Flower Tour," a guided walk led by a flower attendant, and the facility is open 10:00–17:00 (last admission 16:30) except Mondays and year‑end holidays; adult admission is 500 yen and entry is free for junior high students and younger. The name "Sakuya Konohana" comes from a poem in the Kokin Wakashū and means roughly "now is the time for the blossoms to bloom in Osaka."
