Salher Fort, located near Salher village in Nashik district, Maharashtra, is the highest fort in the Sahyadri mountain range at 1,567 meters above sea level.
Historically known as Gavalgarh, it played a key role in the Maratha Empire. The fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1671 during his campaign in the Baglan region. In 1672, it witnessed the significant Battle of Salher where the Maratha forces decisively defeated a large Mughal army, marking a turning point in Maratha military history.
This victory allowed the Marathas to consolidate control over the Baglan region, including the nearby fort of Mulher. The fort is known for its large perimeter, extensive ruins, rock-cut steps, water cisterns, and a temple dedicated to Parshuram Maharaj. Today, it is a popular trekking destination offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and hills, attracting history buffs and adventure seekers alike.
