Salim Garh Fort
Delhi, India
Salimgarh Fort in Delhi was built in 1546 by Salim Shah Suri, the son of Sher Shah Suri, to defend his territories during the Sur Empire’s rule after ousting the Mughals. Located on what was once an island in the Yamuna River, the fort features a triangular plan with thick rubble masonry walls and circular bastions. It stands near the Red Fort and is connected to it by an arched bridge called the Bahadur Shah Gate.
Over time, Salimgarh Fort was converted into a prison by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, a role it retained under the British, especially during India’s struggle for independence when it housed political prisoners. The fort witnessed significant events during the 1857 rebellion and remains an important part of the Red Fort complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
