Samangad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Samangad Fort, located in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra at an elevation of about 2,600 feet, was originally built by the Shilahara king Bhoja II in the 8th century and later significantly fortified by Shivaji Maharaj in 1676.
Known as one of Shivaji's smallest yet strongest forts, it played a key role in Maratha military history and witnessed notable events such as the valorous defense by commander Prataprao Gujar. The fort sits atop an oval-shaped hill, surrounded by an intact eight-foot-high wall, and features remarkable 12th-century architecture highlighted by large square-shaped stepwells with intricate staircases, arches, and underground chambers.
Inside the fort are structures like the Ambabai temple, rock-cut cisterns, water tanks, granaries, and a secret entrance leading to a double-fortified bastion. Despite damage during British rule in 1844 following a garrison rebellion, the fort remains a symbol of Maratha resilience and is a site of historical and architectural interest, with annual festivities celebrating its heritage.
