Verified Sangram Durg

Pune, Maharashtra, India

Sangram Durg, also known as Chakan Fort, is a historic land fort located near Chakan village about 35 kilometers from Pune in Maharashtra.

Originally spanning 65 acres, the fort now covers around 5.5 acres. It was built by a Muslim ruler during the Bahmani period and later came under the Nizamshahi of Ahmadnagar. In the 1590s, Maloji Bhosale, Shivaji's grandfather, was granted the region including this fort. Young Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in 1647 and renamed it Sangram Durg.

The fort is famous for a significant event in 1660 when Mughal general Shaista Khan attacked with 20,000 soldiers but was repelled for 56 days by the elderly commander Firangoji Narsala and a small force of Mavala warriors. Architecturally, the fort is a square structure with bastions at the corners, surrounded by a 15-foot wide and 30-foot deep moat.

It has witnessed multiple battles, including the last one in 1818 between Maratha forces and the British East India Company. The fort represents resilience and Maratha military strategy and remains an important historical monument near Pune.
