Verified Sankagiri Fort

Sankagiri, Tamil Nadu, India

Sankagiri Fort, located in Tamil Nadu, India, was built in the 15th century by the Vijayanagara Empire and later expanded by the Madurai Nayaks.

The fort is perched on a steep hill, surrounded by 14 walls stretching over 17 kilometers, making it one of the largest hill forts in South India. It served as a strategic military base for rulers like Tipu Sultan and later the British, who used it for tax storage.

The fort’s design incorporates a blend of architectural styles from the Vijayanagara, Nayak, and British periods, featuring massive gateways, intricate carvings, watchtowers, temples, mosques, granaries, and secret passages. Notable within the fort is the “Delhi Gate” with iron-studded doors, a death well, and temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, reflecting its religious and cultural significance.

The fort's natural defenses and well-planned fortifications made it nearly impregnable, with only one climbable path as the rest of the hill is steep. Sankagiri Fort symbolizes centuries of South Indian history and architectural ingenuity.
