Verified Santoshgad

Maharashtra, India

Santoshgad Fort, also known as the Fort of Tathavade, is situated in Phaltan Taluka of Satara district in Maharashtra, standing about 2,900 feet above sea level. Historically, it was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj around 1630 and was a key defensive fort on the border near the Bijapur Sultanate.

The fort changed hands multiple times, captured by the Mughals in 1689 and later ceded to Shahu in 1720, remaining under Maratha control until 1818. The design includes three fortified gates, with the third gate built in the Gaumukh architectural style, a strategic defense mechanism to repel invaders.

Santoshgad is divided into three sections: the outer walls, a flat mountain area, and the top citadel or Balekilla. A monastery known as a "Math" and a cave with a water reservoir are present on the way to the fort, along with a statue of Valmiki Rishi. Although many structures are in ruins, the outer walls and bastions remain largely intact.

The fort offers a scenic trek through lush greenery with well-marked trails, making it accessible for visitors interested in history and nature.
