Saqqara (Step Pyramid of Djoser)
Giza Governorate, Egypt
Saqqara is a vast and ancient burial ground located in the Giza Governorate of Egypt. It served as the main necropolis for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis, and spans an area roughly 7 by 1.5 kilometers, situated about 30 kilometers south of Cairo.
This site is home to many pyramids, the most celebrated of which is the Step Pyramid of Djoser. The Step Pyramid of Djoser marks a major milestone in architectural history, it is the oldest known monumental structure made entirely of stone . Constructed during Egypt’s Third Dynasty, around 2630 BC, this pyramid was designed by Imhotep, the king's vizier and chief architect.
It was created as the burial place for Pharaoh Djoser. The pyramid originally began as a mastaba, a flat-roofed, rectangular tomb structure, but was later expanded in a series of stages until it reached its current stepped shape. The finished pyramid consists of six levels, or steps, that rise to a height of about 60 meters (200 feet).
Its base measures approximately 109 by 121 meters, making it an imposing monument on the Saqqara plateau. The Step Pyramid complex is surrounded by a large enclosure wall and includes courtyards, temples, and shrines, all designed to serve the king’s spirit in the fterlife . The pyramid’s construction was a departure from the traditional mastaba tombs and set a precedent for later pyramid building in Egypt.
It was the first large-scale use of stone in architecture, a feat that demonstrated advances in both engineering and religious expression.
