Verified Sarasgad Fort

Maharashtra, India

Sarasgad Fort is located near the village of Pali in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, standing at about 490 meters above sea level.

It is known for its four pinnacles, which make it easily recognizable and served as a watch post to monitor the surrounding region. The fort has a rich history, having been captured by Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I during his Konkan campaigns in the late 15th century and later repaired by Shivaji Maharaj, who invested significant resources into its fortifications.

Despite its relatively small top area, Sarasgad features numerous caves used by soldiers, around ten rock-cut water tanks that provide water year-round, and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Visitors climb 111 ancient stone steps to reach the main entrance, called Dindi Darwaza, which leads to various ruins and the Balekilla or main citadel.

The fort provides panoramic views of neighboring forts such as Sudhagad and Tailbaila, and its architecture reflects a blend of strategic military design and cultural elements from the Maratha era. Sarasgad was historically part of the Bhor princely state until India's independence and remains a significant site of natural beauty and historical importance.
