Sarjekot Fort
Sarjekot, Maharashtra, India
Sarjekot Fort is a small coastal fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1668 at the mouth of Kalavali Creek near Malvan in Maharashtra.
It is located around 3 kilometers north of Sindhudurg Fort and was part of the chain of forts protecting the Konkan coast. The fort’s strategic purpose was to provide safe anchorage for Maratha ships during storms, with the creek offering a natural harbor shielded by the fort's walls.
Sarjekot Fort is roughly square-shaped, about 26 meters by 27 meters, with five bastions and thick stone walls, some facing the Arabian Sea in good condition. Inside, the fort has small houses, a well called Tulsi Vrindavan, and stairs leading to the ramparts. Access is from Malvan via a short road to the arched entrance.
The fort offers scenic views of the sea, nearby forts like Sindhudurg, and the surrounding coastline. While the entrance gate has largely collapsed, the bastions remain sturdy, reflecting Shivaji's military architectural skills in fortifying coastal defenses in the 17th century.
