Senshū Park

Akita, Japan, Japan

Senshū Park is a large public park in the center of Akita City, Akita Prefecture, built on the ruins of Kubota Castle, the residence of the Satake clan that ruled the Akita Domain for 267 years from 1602. The park covers about 14.4 hectares and is designed as a traditional Japanese garden with ponds, moats, wooded areas, and seasonal plantings, making it one of Japan’s 100 top parks and one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots. Its most famous feature is the spring cherry blossom display, with around 700–730 cherry trees, including an old Somei Yoshino tree, attracting visitors for the Senshū Park Sakura Festival in mid‑ to late April, when the grounds are lit up at night and surrounded by food stalls. Within the park, visitors can see historic structures such as the reconstructed Front Gate of Kubota Castle, a 18th‑century guardhouse, and a reconstructed watchtower (Osumi‑Yagura) that offer views of the city, along with shrines including Yojiro Inari Shrine and Hachiman Akita Shrine, and the Satake Historical Material Museum that displays documents, arms, and armor from the domain period. The park is easily accessible, about a 10–15 minute walk from Akita Station, and serves as a quiet, scenic oasis in the city that changes visibly with the seasons, from azaleas in May and lotuses in summer to autumn foliage in October and snowy winter scenes.
