Shahi Qila, Jaunpur (Jaunpur Fort)
Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, India
Shahi Qila, also known as Jaunpur Fort or Karar Fort, is a historic fortress located in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, built in the 14th century by Ibrahim Naib Barbak, a subordinate of Feroz Shah Tughlaq.
The fort was constructed on the site of an earlier fort called Kerar Kot, near the banks of the Gomti River, offering strategic elevation and panoramic views. It features massive stone walls forming an irregular quadrangle with prominent eastern gates, including a large inner gate about 14 meters high and an outer gate decorated with blue and yellow tiles added during the Mughal period.
Within the fort, few original structures remain visibly intact, but key highlights include a mosque built in 1376 with Hindu and Buddhist architectural influences and an intriguing Turkish-style hammam known for its complex maze-like layout with domed ceilings and water channels.
The fort's walls and bastions once featured a double-layered defense system and moats, though these have largely dried up. The Shahi Qila holds cultural and historical significance, representing a blend of Tughlaq and Sharqi architectural styles, serving as a royal residence and military base in medieval times. It now stands as an archaeological monument preserved for its heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into the medieval history of Jaunpur.
