Shergarh Fort, located in Atru Tehsil near Baran in Rajasthan, is an ancient fort originally known as Koshvardhan Fort. The site has a rich history dating back to at least 790 AD, as evidenced by an inscription mentioning a ruler named Samanta Devadatta who built a Buddhist temple and monastery here.

The fort derives its current name from Sher Shah Suri, who captured it during his 16th-century campaign. Strategically situated on a hillock beside the Parban River, Shergarh Fort was a vital military stronghold featuring robust defensive walls, eight large turrets, and multiple gates, including a prominent eastern gate.

The complex houses temples dedicated to Jain and Brahmanical deities, palatial structures, granaries, and soldiers' quarters, showcasing a blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and medieval Afghan architectural elements. Over centuries, the fort witnessed Mughal occupation and later governance by regional rulers, blending military importance with religious and cultural significance.
