Shergarh Fort Dholpur
Rajasthan, India
Shergarh Fort in Dholpur, Rajasthan, was originally constructed in 1532 by Maharaja Maldev of the Rathore dynasty as a strategic military bastion. It gained its current name after Sher Shah Suri captured and renovated the fort in 1540 to defend his Afghan kingdom against the Mewar rulers.
Positioned on the banks of the Chambal River, Shergarh Fort served as a key defensive stronghold with massive walls, bastions, and four gates, the eastern gate being the most prominent.
The fort features a Hanuman temple, several palaces, courtyards, and other structures, many adorned with detailed carvings of Hindu deities and Jain motifs, showcasing the region’s rich cultural blend. Though largely in ruins now, Shergarh Fort remains an important archaeological and historical site reflecting Rajasthan’s medieval military architecture and heritage.
It is easily accessible from Dholpur city and offers visitors a chance to explore Rajasthan’s layered history and natural scenic beauty.
