Verified Shergarh Fort

Shergarh, Bihar, India

Shergarh Fort, also called Bhurkuda Fort, is a historic hill fort located on the Kaimur plateau in Sasaram, Bihar.

It was built between 1540 and 1545 by Emperor Sher Shah Suri and was used as a military stronghold during his reign. The fort covers about 16 square kilometers and is surrounded by dense forest, offering a strategic location with views of enemy movements from up to ten miles away. Its architecture includes massive ramparts, eight domed entrances (five of which remain), and large pillared halls on both sides of the main gate which were used as offices and guard barracks.

The fort features two large courts called Bada Angana and Chhota Angana that contain elaborate stone rooms including ladies' chambers with fine plaster work. It has underground chambers and an old water tank lined with masonry.

While many parts are ruins today, the fort's design demonstrates superior engineering and strategic importance, with numerous tunnels, basements, and efforts made to defend it from invaders. It also reflects Sher Shah Suri’s legacy as a skilled ruler and military leader.
