Shirgaon Fort
Shirgaon, Thane, Maharashtra, India
Shirgaon Fort, located in Shirgaon village near Palghar in Thane district (now Palghar district), Maharashtra, India, is a historic coastal fort standing about 200 feet tall and spanning over 150 feet, originally built by the Portuguese and later captured by Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1739 for strategic watch over Arabian Sea threats.
Positioned beside a picturesque yet often lonely beach, its solid black basalt walls, bastions, steps, and parapets remain in excellent condition despite partial ruins, featuring hidden caves, a rare multi-branched palm tree, and a historic five-foot cannon marking past battles.
British forces took control in 1818, and today it draws history enthusiasts for its scenic Konkan coast setting and well-preserved masonry amid fishing village vibes.
