Shivadi Fort
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Shivadi Fort, also known as Sewri Fort, is a historic fort located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, built by the British East India Company in 1680.
The fort served as a watchtower and the first line of defense against invasions, especially from the Portuguese and other colonial powers, overlooking Mumbai's eastern seaboard and harbor. It is perched on a basalt hill with thick stone walls, bastions, and gateways designed primarily for military defense rather than ornamentation.
The fort witnessed attacks, including one by the Siddi general Yakut Khan in 1689. Later, its military importance declined, and it was used as a Bombay Port Trust godown. Sewri Fort overlooks the Sewri mudflats, a natural habitat frequented by migratory flamingos during winter, adding ecological significance to its historical value.
Though currently in ruins, efforts are ongoing to restore the fort as a Grade I heritage site, emphasizing conservation and creating visitor-friendly facilities like gardens and promenades. This site uniquely blends colonial history with Mumbai's natural landscape, making it a culturally valuable landmark.
