Shivgad
Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India
Shivgad Fort, located about 89 km from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, served as a crucial watchtower overseeing the Phonda Ghat trade route from Kolhapur to coastal ports.
Surrounded by dense forests and hill slopes, the fort was historically controlled by Ramchandra Pant Amatya, one of the eleven feudatories who held the fort until Indian independence. The trek to the fort begins near the forest check post at Dajipur village and takes about an hour through a safe, dense jungle path. The fort itself features two bastions, a dilapidated gate, and a notable Sati stone known locally as "Ugvai Devi."
While water is not available on the fort, travelers can find supplies in nearby villages. The fort offers scenic views of the Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding mountains, making it a favored destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Due to its location near one of Asia’s largest biodiversity hotspots, Shivgad is ideal for visitors who appreciate trekking, wildlife, and historical environments.
Night stays are not possible on the fort itself, but arrangements can be made in nearby villages.
