Siddhagad
Maharashtra, India
Siddhagad Fort, located in the Thane district of Maharashtra, is historically significant as a symbol of valor and resistance during India's fight for independence.
Built to oversee trade routes from the Malvan and Achara ports to the Ajara market, it was constructed by the Savant clan. The fort played a key role during the British colonial period when freedom fighters Bhai Kotwal and Hiraji Patil were killed there in 1943, marking its unique contribution to the independence movement among Maharashtra forts.
It covers about 25 acres and features a vast, flat laterite plateau called "Kaap" or "Sada," with a small settlement named Siddhagadwadi. The fort commands scenic views of the Kasal River and the surrounding landscape. It remains relatively unexplored, preserving much of its natural beauty.
Trekking routes to the fort are accessible from Narivali and Borwadi villages, with the former offering a well-marked 9 km trail and the latter a steeper 3.5 to 4 km path. Visitors can enjoy waterfalls, streams, and the rich biodiversity en route, making Siddhagad a favored site for adventurers and history enthusiasts alike.
