Sion Fort
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Sion Fort, located atop a conical hillock in Mumbai, Maharashtra, was built by the British East India Company between 1669 and 1677 under Governor Gerald Aungier.
It marked the boundary between British-held Parel Island and the Portuguese-controlled Salsette Island, serving as a strategic watchtower to guard the passage between the two regions. The fort features thick stone walls, bastions, a small room on top, and remains of stone steps and scattered walls, although it is now largely dilapidated.
From the fort's ramparts, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Mumbai, including areas like the Bandra Kurla Complex, Mahim Creek, and the Bandra Worli Sea Link. Historically significant, the fort was a key defense point against threats from the Portuguese, the Siddis, and the Marathas. Today, the fort is surrounded by the Jawaharlal Nehru Udyan garden and the Mumbai Circle office of the Archaeological Survey of India.
Despite its neglected condition due to limited restoration funds, it serves as a popular morning exercise spot and a cultural landmark where locals gather, including groups practicing dance and sports. The fort embodies a rich colonial history and offers a glimpse into Mumbai's strategic military past.
