Verified Skerries

Ireland, Ireland

Skerries is a charming coastal seaside town in Fingal, County Dublin, Ireland, located about 30 minutes north of Dublin city and easily accessible by the DART commuter train or number 33 bus.

The name comes from the Old Norse word "skere," meaning rocky islands or reef, which became the Irish "na sceirí" (the rocks), reflecting the town's character with five small islands visible from the shore: Shenick Island, St. Patrick's Church Island, Colt Island, Red Island (a tied island), and Rockabill (comprising "The Cow" and "The Calf").

Historically, Skerries was one of the earliest sites of Viking raids on Ireland in 797, once home to St. Patrick's Monastery founded in 432 AD, and grew into a thriving fishing port and major center of hand embroidery before becoming a popular resort town and commuter dormitory town for Dublin in the 20th century.

The town is built around two main streets—Strand Street and Church Street—nestled between surrounding hills and beautiful beaches, with Skerries South Strand being a lovely 2.5-kilometer sandy beach perfect for walking.
