It was recorded as Sladone in the Domesday Book and has historical sites such as the Collegiate Chantry of St Mary founded in the 14th century, and the Grade I listed Church of St James from the late 13th or early 14th century. Slapton is known for Slapton Sands, a three-mile pebble beach bordering the tidal lagoon Slapton Ley, which is the largest natural freshwater lake in the southwest of England and is surrounded by a nature reserve.

During World War II, the area was used for military exercises including the tragic Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal for the Normandy landings with significant loss of life.
