Solapur, Maharashtra, India
Solapur Bhuikot Fort, located about 2 kilometers from Solapur Railway Station in Maharashtra, is a historic land fort built during the 14th century by the Bahmani Sultanate. Known as "Bhuikot," meaning a fort on flat land, it features a typical Bahmani-era double fortification style with two main gates—the North Gate and the Mahakali Gate.
Inside the fort are significant structures including temples dedicated to Shani, Mahakaleshwar, and a ruined Shiva temple housing an underground Shiva Linga, as well as a mosque with a finely carved ceiling supported by numerous pillars. The fort also has an octagonal well and a small pond.
Over the centuries, it passed through control of several rulers including the Mughals, Marathas, and the British. Notably, Emperor Aurangzeb resided there for a year and Bajirao II also stayed here in 1818. Visitors can explore its ruins, enjoy the well-maintained gardens, and visit the small animal zoo within the fort premises. The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India but requires better upkeep to further enhance visitor experience.
