Songir
Maharashtra, India
Songir Fort is a historic fort located in the town of Songir in Dhule district, Maharashtra. The fort sits atop a narrow 30-meter-wide hill and can be reached by a 20-minute climb. It played a significant role in guarding the important trade route between Burhanpur and Surat.
Historically, it came under the control of the Farooqi Sultans from around 1370, before passing to the Mughals, Marathas, and finally the British in 1818. Remarkably, the fort still retains its main entrance door frame, though most other structures are in ruins, and it features a deep well for water.
Songir is also known for its temples such as Someshwar, Gurugovind Maharaj, a Jain Mandir, and the Balaji Rath in the main market street, reflecting the religious and cultural significance of the area. Additionally, the town and fort are famous for the traditional making of copper utensils.
