Southeast Botanical Gardens (Tōnan Shokubutsu Rakuen) is a large commercial botanical garden resort in Okinawa City, central Okinawa Island, reopened in 2013 after renovation and recognized as Japan’s largest outdoor botanical garden.
The 100‑acre (about 40‑hectare) site features over 1,300 species of rare tropical and subtropical plants, including Japan’s tallest king palms (25 meters), a Yusura palm‑lined street, a herb garden, lotus ponds, a baobab tree, and the world’s longest‑living tree, Ryuketsuju.
Highlights include the Water Paradise and greenhouses filled with precious tropical plants, a Polynesian Lake with carp, an insect collection, and seasonal night illuminations such as the Lotus Illumination. The facility offers natural education and experience programs, a restaurant (RESTAURANT PEACE), party and picnic areas, and a fishing pond.
