Southend-on-Sea is a densely populated coastal city in Essex, England, located about 40 miles east of central London on the north side of the Thames Estuary.

It is best known for having the longest pleasure pier in the world, Southend Pier, which stretches over a mile into the estuary. The city originally grew from a small fishing settlement and became a popular seaside resort in the 19th century, boosted by the construction of the pier and a railway connection to London.

Over time, Southend evolved with a mix of commerce, retail developments, and cultural attractions including amusement parks, beaches, gardens, and theaters. It has a vibrant city center with shopping, nightlife, and historical sites dating back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. 

Southend is also served by London Southend Airport, making it easily accessible. The city combines traditional seaside charm with urban amenities and remains a notable destination in southeastern England.
