Verified St. David Fort (RUINS)

Tamil Nadu, India

Fort St. David, now in ruins, was a prominent British fort located near the town of Cuddalore on the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India. It was originally a small fort built in the early 17th century and came under British control in 1690 after being purchased from the Marathas.

Named after the Welsh patron saint by Elihu Yale, then Governor of Madras, the fort evolved into the British headquarters for southern India in the mid-18th century. It played a significant military role during the frequent conflicts between the British, French, and local powers, including survival of French attacks led by Dupleix and changing hands several times before finally being secured by the British in 1785.

After the French threat waned, it was abandoned and gradually fell to ruins. Located near the estuary of the Gadilam River and Silver Beach, the ruins today stand as a reminder of colonial history amidst a scenic coastal setting but lack formal maintenance, giving the site a dilapidated and sometimes haunting appearance.

The fort’s legacy is intertwined with historical figures like Robert Clive and Governor James Macrae, and the nearby area holds cultural and historical significance.
