St Thomas Fort
Kollam, Kerala, India
St Thomas Fort, also known as Tangasseri Fort, is a historic ruined Portuguese fort located on the Arabian Sea coast in the beach town of Tangasseri near Kollam, Kerala.
Built around 1518 by the Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque, it was erected to protect their developing spice trade and trading post established there since 1505.
The fort originally featured three towers, four bastions, and thick ramparts engineered for defense against both sea and land attacks. In 1658, the Dutch captured the fort, temporarily losing and regaining it before finally controlling it until 1795, when the British East India Company took over.
The fort was strategically important for controlling trade routes and served as a colonial military hub. Now mostly in ruins, parts of the walls, bastions, and an arched gateway remain, managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
