Steeple Jason
Falkland Islands, United Kingdom
Steeple Jason is a steep, rugged island in the Jason Islands group of the Falkland Islands, stretching about 8 to 10 kilometers in length, with a rocky ridge rising to 290 meters and divided by a narrow neck into two sections. It is uninhabited and part of a private nature reserve owned by the Wildlife Conservation Society, formerly a sheep and cattle farm until the 1980s.
The island is globally significant for wildlife, hosting the world's largest colony of black-browed albatrosses with over 110,000 breeding pairs, as well as populations of southern rockhopper, gentoo, and Magellanic penguins, striated caracaras, Falkland skuas, and large colonies of sea lions and fur seals. The land is covered mainly by tussac grass, and the island supports over 40 species of flowering plants, including two endemic species.
It is difficult to access but offers exceptional ecological richness and is recognized as a vital area for seabird breeding and conservation.
