Stirling Castle
Stirling, UK, United Kingdom
Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s largest, most historically important, and architecturally impressive castles, perched 250 feet (75 meters) above the surrounding land on the flat top of an ancient extinct volcano. Its strategic location at the crossing point of the River Forth, where the Highlands meet the Lowlands, earned it the saying “whoever held Stirling held the key to Scotland”. First mentioned in 1110, the castle played a central role in Scottish history, witnessing royal coronations, deaths, and battles during the Wars of Scottish Independence, including involvement by William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Mary Queen of Scots was crowned there in 1543, and her son James VI was baptized in the castle’s Chapel Royal. The current grand buildings mostly date from the 15th and 16th centuries under the Stewart kings and queens, with the lavishly decorated Royal Palace showcasing European Renaissance style. Today, managed by Historic Environment Scotland, it stands as a powerful symbol of Scottish independence and national pride, drawing visitors to explore its Great Hall, battlements, and recreated royal interiors.
