Verified Sudhagad

Maharashtra, India

Sudhagad Fort, located in Maharashtra's Raigad district, dates back to the 2nd century BCE and was originally called Bhorapgad after its presiding deity, Bhoraidevi.

The fort has a rich history, having been captured by the Bahamani Sultan in 1436 and later taken over and renamed Sudhagad by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1657, who considered it for the capital of his empire before choosing Raigad. Sudhagad served as a strategic lookout and refuge, protecting trade routes and nearby forts like Sarasgad and Korigad.

The fort has three main gates, including the grand Maha Darwaja, and features temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, water tanks, a granary, and several ruins scattered across a spacious plateau. The Bhoraidevi temple at the summit remains a site of worship.

Although it fell into neglect after British rule, Sudhagad’s walls, gates, and cisterns still stand as a testament to Maratha architecture and history, offering panoramic views of surrounding forts and natural beauty.
