Sumoto Castle Ruins are the remains of a major Sengoku‑period mountain castle on Mount Mikuma (about 133 meters above sea level) in central Awaji Island, just east of Sumoto City, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, and are one of the largest and most impressive stone‑walled castles in western Japan.

The castle was built in 1526 by Atagi Haruoki (also called Ataka), a leader of the Awaji navy and retainer of the Miyoshi clan, and was later expanded and stone‑walled in the late 16th century by Wakisaka Yasuharu, who made it the political center of Awaji Province and a key stronghold controlling the Kitan Strait and shipping routes at the southern entrance to Osaka Bay.

The site stretches roughly 800 meters east‑to‑west and 600 meters north‑to‑south, with massive stone walls, climbing stone slopes (ishigatami), and a central keep foundation, and although the original buildings were dismantled after the Meiji Restoration, a symbolic concrete “tenshu” (castle keep) was erected here in 1928 to commemorate Emperor Shōwa’s ascension, making it the oldest reconstructed castle keep in Japan though visitors cannot enter it.

The ruins are protected as a National Historic Site (since 1999) and were selected as one of the Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles in 2017, and the surrounding area is now a public park with walking paths, stone stairways, and viewpoints that offer sweeping views of Sumoto, the harbor, and Osaka Bay, especially beautiful in mid‑April when about 200 cherry trees bloom against the backdrop of the stone walls and the mock keep.
