Surat Castle, also known as Surat Fort, is a historic fortification in Surat, Gujarat, built in the 16th century by Sultan Mahmud III of the Gujarat Sultanate to protect the city from repeated Portuguese attacks.

Completed in 1546 under the supervision of Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier titled Khudawand Khan, the fort is situated near the Tapi River and features a strategic design including massive stone walls, bastions, and gateways blending Islamic and Indian architectural styles. Its construction incorporated advanced defensive techniques such as masonry bonded with iron strips and sealed with melted lead to withstand assaults.

The fort played a crucial role in safeguarding Surat, which was a thriving port city central to international trade during that period. Though parts of the fort have deteriorated, it remains a prominent monument open to visitors, with exhibits showcasing artifacts that reflect Surat’s rich historical legacy.

Its entrance, known as the Delhi Darwaza, and other architectural elements highlight the blend of military utility and aesthetic design from its era.​
