Sutton Place
UK, United Kingdom
Sutton Place is a large Grade I listed Tudor country house set in a small estate beside the River Wey north‑east of Guildford in Surrey, England, about three miles from the town.
Built around 1525 for Sir Richard Weston, a courtier of Henry VIII, it is especially important in art history as one of the first major English houses to show early Italianate Renaissance design, with classical detailing in a largely defensive‑free structure.
The property has passed through a series of prominent owners, including J. Paul Getty, who lived there in the 1960s and 1970s, and since the early 21st century it has been owned by a trust linked to the Russian‑Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov. Today it remains a private, working estate focused on historic‑house preservation rather than regular public opening.
