Suvarnadurga Fort
Maharashtra, India
Suvarnadurga Fort, also known as the "Golden Fort," is a historic sea fort located on a small island near Harnai in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India, along the Arabian Sea coast between Mumbai and Goa.
Built originally by the Adilshah navy in the 16th century for defense and shipbuilding, it was later captured and fortified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1660, who used it as a key maritime stronghold to counter European colonial powers and local rivals. The fort includes a smaller land fort called Kanakadurga at the base near the Harnai port.
With thick fortifications and walls up to 15 feet, it served as a center of naval power and defense for the Maratha Empire and later came under Peshwas and British control until the colonial era ended. The fort can only be reached by boat from Harnai port today, and although some structures like carved statues and old cannons remain, it mostly stands as a protected monument reflecting the rich maritime heritage of the Konkan coast.
Its strategic location and historical significance make Suvarnadurga a treasured landmark in Maharashtra’s coastal defense history.
