Taggia
Liguria, Italy
Taggia is a historic town in the Liguria region of Italy, located in the Province of Imperia with about 13,000 residents. The town is divided into three parts: the main settlement inland in the Valle Argentina, the seaside resort Arma di Taggia, and Levà, an industrial area.
Taggia is recognized as one of Italy's most beautiful villages and is known for its well-preserved medieval center with narrow alleys, arches, and small piazzas. Key landmarks include a medieval bridge with 15 arches, the castle (originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 16th century as a fortress), and several historic churches like San Giacomo and San Filippo. The castle, though mostly in ruins today, offers panoramic views and hosts cultural events.
The town is famous for Taggiasca olives, highly regarded in Italy for olive oil and table olives. Arma di Taggia on the coast features sandy beaches, clear seas, and a mix of seaside charm and medieval architecture. The area also boasts the Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Arma, located in a cave with historic and religious significance.
The town blends natural beauty, rich history, and cultural heritage, making it a quietly captivating destination in Liguria. It is accessible by road and train, situated roughly 16 km from Imperia and near other coastal towns like Sanremo.
