Verified Tahara Castle

Tahara, Japan, Japan

Tahara Castle is a small flatland castle in Tahara City, southern Aichi Prefecture, Japan, located on a low hill near the entrance of the tomoe‑shaped bay (called Hakō) at the root of the Atsumi Peninsula, which once made its position a strong natural defense against attacks from Mikawa Bay.

The castle was originally built around 1480 by Toda Munemitsu, a Muromachi‑period military commander who used it as his base to control much of the Atsumi Peninsula, and over the centuries it came under the control of various lords, including Ikeda Terumasa and later the Tokugawa hereditary retainers of the Miyake clan, who ruled the 12,000‑koku Tahara Domain as daimyō from the early Edo period until the Meiji Restoration.

Although Tahara was a minor domain, it was unusual for its size in that it retained a full castle rather than a simpler fortified administrative headquarters (jinya), and during the Edo period the castle was strengthened with new moats and stone walls, including the “Sodeike” stone rampart that is considered the oldest surviving stone wall at the site.

The castle was demolished in 1872 after the abolition of the feudal system, and today the ruins are known as Tahara Castle Remains Park and host Hakō Shrine (dedicated to the Miyake clan and to Watanabe Kazan, a renowned painter and Western‑studies scholar who was a senior councilor in the domain), plus the Tahara City Museum, which is built on the former honmaru (main bailey) and displays national Important Cultural Properties, local artifacts, and materials on Watanabe Kazan and other domain history.
