Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho, Japan, Japan
Takachiho Gorge, in the town of Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, is a dramatic narrow chasm carved by the Gokase River through high columns of dark volcanic basalt, forming a canyon around 80 to 100 meters deep and just a few meters wide in parts.
The gorge is famous for its lush green cliffs, moss‑covered rock faces, and the 17‑meter‑high Manai Falls that plunges down into the river, creating a striking natural backdrop especially in spring and autumn. Visitors can walk along paved paths and bridges above the gorge for panoramic views or rent small rowboats at the southern end to paddle right up into the heart of the canyon and see the waterfall and towering rock columns from below.
The area is also known for evening illuminations from mid‑May to November and sits just outside the historic town center, making it one of Kyushu’s most iconic and myth‑rich natural attractions.
