Takatenjin Castle Ruins are the remains of a famous Sengoku‑period mountain castle in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, located on Mount Kakuo (also called Tsuruo‑yama), a 132‑meter (about 200‑meter in some descriptions) hill with sheer cliffs and narrow access paths that made it a virtually impregnable fortress.

Built originally in the 16th century, possibly by the Imagawa clan, the castle later became a key stronghold in the struggle between the Takeda and Tokugawa clans, and was seized by Takeda Katsuyori in 1574 after an earlier unsuccessful attack by Takeda Shingen in 1571, making its control the focal point of the saying “He who controls Takatenjin controls Enshū” (the Tōtōmi region).

In 1581, Tokugawa Ieyasu blockaded the castle with six surrounding fortifications, starved the defenders, and finally captured it after fierce fighting, then razed the castle and abandoned the site, ending its use as a military base. Today, the ruins are designated a National Historic Site (since 1975, extended in 2007) and were selected as one of the “Continued 100 Famous Castles of Japan” in 2017, with the city of Kakegawa maintaining hiking trails, informative signs, and preserved stone walls, dry moats, and earthen ramparts that show the castle’s distinctive “Z‑shaped” layout, stretching across the eastern and western peaks of the mountain with a saddle in between.
