Verified Takayama Castle Ruins

Takayama, Japan, Japan

Takayama Castle Ruins are the remains of a remote mountain castle in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, located on a peak about 687 meters above sea level in the northern Japanese Alps and now preserved as Shiroyama Park, the largest park in the city.

The castle was built between 1588 and 1600 by Kanamori Nagachika, daimyō of Hida Province, to serve as his main stronghold and administrative center, and during its use from the late 16th century until 1695 it featured a main keep, two secondary keeps, stone walls, earthen ramparts, and a surrounding moat, blending influences from both Kyoto and Edo in the design of the associated castle town.

When Hida Province became direct shogunate territory (tenryō) in the early 1690s, the castle buildings were dismantled and a new lowland administrative compound (Takayama Jin’ya) was built at the foot of the mountain, and today only limited stone‑wall fragments and the outline of the former enclosures remain on the mountain, while the local magistrate’s office from the castle town, known as the Takayama Jin’ya, has been preserved almost in its original form and is the only surviving Edo‑period government building of its kind in Japan, located just below the park.

The ruins are accessible on a gentle 15‑minute walk from Takayama Station or about a 40‑minute circular trail around the park, with a small children’s area and picnic spots, and on clear days the summit offers views of the Northern Japan Alps, making it a relaxed, nature‑focused historical spot that complements visits to Takayama’s Old Town and the nearby Takayama Jin’ya.
