Verified Takeda Castle Ruins

Asago, Hyōgo, Japan, Japan

Takeda Castle Ruins are the remains of a famous Sengoku‑period mountain castle in Asago City, northern Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, perched on a ridge of Mount Kōjō at about 353 meters above sea level and often called the “Castle in the Sky” or “Machu Picchu of Japan” because on clear autumn mornings mist fills the valleys below while the stone walls seem to float above the clouds.

The castle was built around 1443 by Otagaki Mitsukage, a retainer of the Yamana daimyō, and later became a key stronghold in the western campaigns of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who conquered it, and its defenders fought against the Tokugawa forces at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, after which the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin, leaving only stone walls, foundations, and traces of the layout that show a central fortress with three wing‑like extensions.

Protected as a National Historic Site since 1943 and listed as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Castles, the ruins became a popular tourist site after restoration work in the 1970s and 1980s, and today visitors can walk along well‑marked paths, climb stone steps, and explore the terraced stone ramparts and enclosures while looking out over the surrounding countryside and, in the right season, the sea of clouds below, with admission around 500 yen for adults and opening hours that vary by season and weather, typically from early morning in summer and late autumn to mid‑day in winter, and accessible by taking the JR Bantan Line to Takeda Station and then a short bus or taxi ride or walking trail to the mountain base.
