Takmak Fort
Ganje, Maharashtra, India
Takmak Fort, located near Ganje in Maharashtra's Palghar district, was built in the 12th century by King Bheemdev, son of King Bhimdev.
It was originally used as a watchtower to monitor trade routes along the coast close to Mumbai. Control of the fort shifted over centuries among various rulers, including the Sultans, the Portuguese, and the Marathas, with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj likely capturing it during his campaigns. The Portuguese held the fort until the Maratha army won it back after the Battle of Vasai in 1739.
Later, the British took control in 1817 and used the fort as a prison. The remains include ruined fortifications, 32 rock-cut water cisterns, a broken cannon, and traces of buildings scattered over a hilltop that sits about 2,000 feet above sea level. The fort offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and reflects a history of strategic military importance and power struggles along Maharashtra’s northern coastal region.
